Respondus

Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor work with Blackboard (Bb) to securely provide online tests. Lockdown Browser ensures students can only access the test, and no other applications or windows can be open while taking the exam. Respondus Monitor is a remote proctoring service that records students taking online exams using web cameras.

Things to Remember

  • LockDown and Monitor can only be used with Bb tests and cannot include questions where the students attach images as they would need to access other programs for that (camera or email).
  • LockDown Browser locks the student into that testing session window. They cannot open other programs, browser tabs, etc until they finish the test. This program must be installed before usage.
  • Monitor records the students taking the test and uses an algorithm to flag any issues. Instructors review any issues but cannot watch the test taking live. Students MUST have a webcam to use Monitor. Student MUST use LockDown Browser with Monitor.
  • The FOIP statement for Monitor usage is already posted on the Bb login page and has been emailed to students.

I'm new. How do I get started using Respondus Lockdown Browser?

This is video tutorial will show you how to deploy your Blackboard exams using Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor.

REMEMBER, your students will need to download Respondus LockDown Browser before the exam.

Whats the difference between Lockdown Browser and Monitor?

Respondus LockDown Browser is a web browser that is installed on your computer. Student must open LockDown Browser, login to Blackboard and open their exams using this web browser. Once the Blackboard exam begins, the student will not be able to open any other applications or windows.

Respondus Monitor works with LockDown Browser. Students need a web camera in order to complete these Blackboard Exams using Respondus Monitor, which records the students taking remote online exams.

You can run Respondus LockDown Browser Blackboard exams without using Respondus Monitor, but you need LockDown Browser in order to use Respondus Monitor.

What do I need to run Respondus Lockdown Browser?

How to I access my student recordings from Respondus Monitor?

It can take a couple of hours to create the videos for a test (longer with large classes and longer tests).  You can access the results. After that time, go back into Course Tools /   Respondus LockDown Browser in your course, use the dropdown next to the test and select Class Results.
